LED
clocks are clocks that use a light-emitting diode (LED). A light-emitting
diode is a semiconductor device that emits narrow-spectrum light
when electrically biased in the forward direction. This creates
a form of electroluminescence. The color of the light emitted is
near-ultraviolet, visible, or infrared. Not until 1962 was the first
practical visible-spectrum LED developed by Nick Holonyak Jr. of
General Electric.
LEDs are used to transmit digital information like in remote controls.
LEDs are also used in safety devices like traffic signals. LEDs
are used for illumination like in photographic darkrooms. LEDs are
also used as informative indicators in various types of embedded
systems like in toys. LEDs are used for many different things in
our life. And there are, of course, LED clocks.
LED clocks are classically seen as alarm clocks. LED clocks are
typically those clocks with the big red numbers that change as the
time goes by. LED clocks are still being made, especially as alarm
clocks, but they are beginning to go out of style as other digital
clocks and atomic clocks and clocks with LCD screens are becoming
more popular.
