The
majority of people that know anything about clocks will say that
cable driven clocks are better than chain driven clocks. That being
said, I myself prefer chain driven clocks.
What is the main difference between chain driven clocks and cable
driven clocks? Well, chain driven clocks have weights that are hung
by chains and in a cable driven clock, the weights are hung by cables.
There is more to it than this, though. It is generally thought
of as easier to wind the movement of a cable driven clock. A cable
driven clock has a key or crank that you simply insert into the
clock face to wind it. With a chain driven clock, you must pull
down on the chain while the weights rise. So, yes, it is perhaps
harder to wind a chain driven clock, but that does not mean that
it tells time less well.
Both chain driven clocks and cable driven clocks tell the time
well. Besides, a grandfather clock is a clock that you will probably
have in your family for generations. After generations of use, there
is a chance that the cables or chains will go bad. Anyone can change
the chains of a grandfather clock with a chain driven movement.
A cable driven clock will need to be sent to a repair man to have
the cables replaced or the springs changed on them. Besides, chain
driven movements are much cheaper than cable driven movements. Who
wants to spend extra money on something that will not even make
your clock tell the time more accurately?
Also, chain-driven clocks are simply classic. Sometimes a chain
driven clock will make a little sound from the chains descending
over the wheels - some people may not like this sound, but
I think that it makes the clock seem even more genuine and classic.
Besides, I am a lover of cuckoo clocks as well, and cuckoo clocks
have fantastic chains and weights. I just love chain driven clocks.
