Many
people have trouble deciding whether they want a cable driven clock
or a chain driven clock, but the answer should really be quite easy:
go with a cable driven clock.
Cable driven clocks are clocks with a cable driven movement. The
weights of a cable driven clock are suspended by cables and pulleys.
Cable driven clocks use a key or a crank that inserts into the face
of the clock to pull up the weights which will then fall over the
course of the week, and this is what powers the clock.
Generally cable driven clocks are the preferred movement over chain
driven movements. It is just so simple to insert a crank into the
dial to crank up the weights. To wind a chain driven movement, a
person must open the waist door of the cabinet (of a grandfather
clock) to pull the free ends of the chains downward - while
doing this, it is pretty easy to accidentally hit the weights or
pendulum. It is just easier to wind the movements of a cable driven
clock.
Yes, both cable driven clocks and chain driven clocks regulate
the time well, but winding a cable driven clock is so much easier.
This is part of why cable driven clocks are generally more expensive
than chain driven models. That being said, and all other aspects
of the clock the same, I would definitely not choose a chain driven
clock over a cable driven clock.
