Most
clocks out in the world keep track of the time, day after day after
day, for what purpose? What are all of the numbers that come and
go adding up to on your clock? What do they really mean? Just the
time? Well, countdown clocks offer a bit more meaning to the numbers.
Countdown clocks do not simply show the time - in fact, most
countdown clocks do not show the time at all, at least not how we
think of the time.
Countdown clocks have one main purpose - to countdown until
a certain event or time. You can set a countdown clock to countdown
until the new millennium, the new year, an important anniversary,
a physics test, or whatever it is you need to countdown to.
Countdown clocks will tell you exactly how many years, days, hours,
minutes, and seconds you have until that particular event happens.
Countdown clocks countdown to zero - zero is the “time”
of whatever even the countdown clock was counting down to.
We definitely have a society that is more in tune with “time”
clocks. We set up our appointments at a certain time; we eat dinner
at a certain time; we go to bed at a certain time. Everything we
do is at a certain time, and we check our clocks constantly to make
sure that we are not late, etc.
In this society, we would need multiple countdown clocks. We need
one countdown clock to countdown to the time we must arrive at work,
another countdown clock to tell us when to eat, and another countdown
clock to countdown to a certain appointment. In today’s society,
a countdown clock would clearly not work very well.
If, on the other hand, we had a more open society, a society freed
from the constraints of time, a countdown clock would be very useful.
In such a society, we would eat when we were hungry, sleep when
we were tired, work when we needed to, and so on. We would not need
to live our time by clocks. We could, instead, simply have a few
big moments each year, like the new year or a birthday to set our
countdown clocks to.
Of course, in the society as it is now, that is still what we most
likely use countdown clocks for. So, really, our society needs a
good mix of “time” clocks and countdown clocks.
