Antique
clocks are beautiful decorations, wonderful tools, and fantastic
piece of history. You can find antique clocks from different times
in history. Some of the first clocks ever made were sundials and
water clocks. The Egyptians used sundials and water clocks as far
back as the 8th century BC.
You may be hard-pressed to find any sort of clock from 8th century
BC today to add to your collection of antique clocks, but it is
still possible to find fantastic antique sundials… from a
later date.
The first mechanical clock was invented by a 10th century monk.
In the 14th century, people started to use weight-driven tower clocks.
Of course, these clocks were only useful to the surrounding community.
Time differed from tower clock to tower clock.
During the 17th century, more accurate clocks were made. Also,
clocks became a little more common as the price was reduced. Even
so, not many homes had clocks. If you are a collector of antique
clocks, one of the earliest clocks that you may be able to find
come from this time. You may be able to find fantastic antique clocks
like the table drum and English Lantern clocks. Quite obviously,
antique clocks from this time period are extremely rare. Not only
was it a long time ago and the clocks may have since deteriorated,
but not many were made.
Not until the Industrial Revolution did clocks become readily available.
In America, clock making became very well established in cities
like Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. Many of the clocks produced
during this time were grandfather clocks. If you want an antique
clock, you are more likely to find one from this time period -
more clocks were made, and families pass down as heirlooms grandfather
clocks - they are like pieces of furniture.
Antique clocks can be quite expensive, but before spending more
than $100 on an antique clock, be sure to get a document that verifies
the authenticity of your antique clock. You most certainly do not
want to spend $30,000 on a fake “antique” clock. If
you are wondering if your antique clock is, indeed, and authentic
antique, look for the name of the manufacturer. It should be printed
or stamped on the mechanism of your antique clock.
Antique clock manufacturers include Seth Thomas, Ansonia, Ithica,
New Haven, and Jerome. Antique clocks could also be from other clock
manufacturers, too. Be sure to get a document that proves the authenticity
of your antique clock!
Antique clocks are wonderful timepieces, but they can be even better
conversation pieces. Antique clocks look great in your home or office,
but they are more than just clocks - they are pieces of history.
